The TAMN Story

2001

Founding of the Academy

On 16 August 2001, twenty-six management scholars gathered at the University of Benin for an inaugural meeting hosted under the Vice Chancellorship of Prof. A. R. Anao. That meeting gave birth to The Academy of Management Nigeria (TAMN).

The founding President was Professor Adebayo Akerele of the University of Benin, and the founding Vice-President was Professor Nnamdi Asika of the University of Lagos. The Academy was established with a clear vision: to be continuously on the cutting edge of Management Sciences thought and practice for the benefit of mankind and society.

CAC Registration

On 7 June 2004, TAMN was formally incorporated as Incorporated Trustees under the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) with the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria — Certificate No. 000533. This gave the Academy full legal standing as a professional body.

2005

Inaugural Annual Conference

TAMN held its First Annual Conference in November 2005 at Rockview Hotel, Abuja, under the theme "Management: Key to National Development." This established what would become the flagship event of Nigeria's management academic calendar — a tradition that has continued unbroken for nineteen editions and counting.

2003–

Nigerian Academy of Management Journal (NAMJ)

TAMN launched the Nigerian Academy of Management Journal (NAMJ), the Academy's flagship peer-reviewed publication. Published annually at first, the journal moved to twice-yearly publication in January 2010, releasing issues every January and July. NAMJ provides a credible forum for the development and propagation of management theory and practice, with full blind peer review for all submitted articles. Copyright to all published articles is vested in The Academy of Management Nigeria.

Growth Across Nigeria

Through successive Annual Conferences held at universities across every region of Nigeria — from Bayero University Kano and Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in the north, to University of Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka in the south-west and south-east, to University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State University, and Federal University Otuoke in the south-south — TAMN grew from a small group of founding scholars into a truly national academy.

By its 19th Annual Conference in September 2025, hosted by Southern Delta University, Ozoro, Delta State, the Academy had grown to 1,039 active members drawn from universities, research institutions, government agencies, and industry across Nigeria.
